X-Games XDL Coverage from Stunt Bums

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

As always, our friends at www.stuntbums.com were on hand at the XDL Show demo at X-Games 16.

Here is an excerpt from their site and a link to their full coverage

“X-Games 16 saw the first ever sportbike freestyle demo in the rebelliously orphan sporting event. While reps from ever major brand and TV network in the country and extreme sports fans meandered through the event space they could enjoy the smoke, noise and one-wheeled spectacle that is stunting today.

A select group of dedicated competitive riders from all over the country enjoyed the privilege of hitting the pavement for a few minutes to rip at the one and only X-Games. The show ran on a modified XDL schedule with events like FMF Cup, Sartso Women’s Cup, Aprilia Challenge and Sickest Trick. Each rider set out on the field to perform their most crowd pleasing tricks to paint a picture of the sport today and the potential of the sport tomorrow.”

Los Angeles, CA (July 19, 2010) — After almost two years of preparation, the XDL Championship Series will be performing its first-ever demonstration at the LA Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, 7/29 as part of X Games 16. The XDL program will run from noon to 3:30pm and take place in Lot 4 on the South side of the stadium, which is part of the exhibitor and pit area open to the public. 3. K&N Circle Challenge
4. Aprilia All Star Challenge
5. Sartso Women’s Cup
6. Freestyle Burnout

While still just a demonstration and not a full competition, inclusion on this level is a first for the sportbike freestyle culture. Stated XDL Director of Competition Thomas Evans: “Explaining the feeling of building a sport from nothing and bringing it to the masses is impossible, so I will try to keep it simple. Being a welcome part of X Games in any capacity is the culmination of a dozen years of blood, sweat and tears. I am very pleased to see that our hard work has gotten us here, I am more excited now for our future than ever.” Added XDL Founder Randy Grube: “It is great to see the progress we have made and I’m excited to let the athletes show off their skills for the X Games crowd. XDL is the only championship of its kind and is the leader in reaching the core 20-year old sportbike demographic. Each XDL event features the world’s most skilled sportbike riders squaring off in seven unique competitions for over $10,000 in prize money. Since its inception in 2006 the series has built a global following in places as far off as Japan, Australia, France, Thailand and Eastern Europe, and in the process emerged as the fastest growing action sport in America. The stateside event series schedule includes Daytona Beach, Lake Havasu City, Nashville, Los Angeles and Indianapolis. New for 2010, XDL Magazine was launched in time for the season opener and provides a comprehensive overview of the series and its athletes. The new line of XDL apparel is available at http://www.xdlstore.com. And on October 12th, Inside XDL, a documentary drama on the series and its athletes will premier on Versus Network.

UPDATE from July 13!
We have visited lot 4 at the coliseum and have spy pics! One of the pics shows the lot, and then we noticed some strange orange tape on the ground. It appears to be marking off a large rectangle as we can tell.

We got into a small scuffle with security as we were trying to find all of the marks in the lot. So we could not verify exact dimensions!

ORIGINAL POST FROM JULY 12
Whats cracking everyone? The stuntride crew is in Los Angeles hunting down any and all X-Games and stuntriding info..

We stopped by the XDL offices and swiped a peek of the official press release for the upcoming sportbike freestyle demo.

Here are the details that we gathered:

The XDL stunt riding demo will be at the LA Coliseum on Thursday, July 29th, as an official part of X Games 16. The XDL program will begin at noon and be in Lot 4. This lot is beside the swimming stadium off of MLK blvd at Hoover St. We will go get some pics this afternoon.

According to our sources at X games this area is an exhibitor based area and should be packed. It opens at noon and admission to this area and XDL is free!!

We havent gotten any info on parking yet. So assume you have to pay!

According to rumors about XDL we know that its just a demo but we think that they are going to run an amended version of their full events competitions. These are normally..

1. FMF Cup
2. Speed & Strength Sickest Trick
3. K&N Circle Challenge
4. Aprilia All Star Challenge
5. Sartso Womens Cup
6. Freestyle Burnout
7. Battle of the Brands

One last thing. We saw a printed email from XDL Host and competition director Thomas Evans to XDL Founder Randy Grube. While we cannot confirm what the email was about, we did notice a list of names that included some of the sports top stars such as:

Bill Dixon
Teach McNeil
Ernie Vigil
Dan Jackson
Joe Dryden
Aaron Colton
Luke Emmons
Nick Apex
Darius Khashabi
Alex Flores
Tony Carbajal
Lin Savage
Rick Hart
Kyle Rapport

We assume this is a partial list of riders that we will see in Los Angeles.

Next mission, sneak over to the coliseum and snake some pics of lot 4 for you guys!

Post this page everywhere to stay updated on all the latest news!!

XDL BBQ & Industry Night at Bert’s Mega Mall on June 17

Los Angeles, CA (June 8, 2010) — Stunt riding has been around for well over a decade. XDL is in its fifth season. The sport is doubling in size almost every year. But have you ever asked yourself what you really know about it? What are the bike trends? How are they influencing the mainstream? What about riding gear? What happened to all the kids that used to stunt in a t-shirt? Now they are riding in proper gear. But which gear and why? And what do they really want? Where are the business opportunities? XDL BBQ & Industry Night at Bert’s Mega Mall is designed to help you find answers to those and many other questions.

We realize it is short notice but since athletes and staff are in town for XDL Los Angeles on June 18 & 19, and Bert’s Mega Mall is being a very generous host, we thought we’d give it a try.

From 6pm to 8pm XDL staff and athletes will be hosting a series of discussion sessions that will delve into the major topics. Each discussion session will start with a 10 minute talk and then be followed by an open Q&A session:

1. XDL and the Future Direction of the Sport
- Why does the sport exist?
- How has it progressed since 2006?
- Where is it going?
Speaker: Randy Grube
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Café

2. The Culture of Stunt Riding
- What is the stunt culture and how did it originate?
- How does it fit in with the modern action sports culture?
- How do you tap into this market?
Speaker: Thomas Evans
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Café

3. Bikes & Gear
Speakers: Bill Dixon, Joe Dryden, Aaron Colton, Nick Brocha, Alex Flores and others
- What are the popular freestyle bikes and what are the typical modifications?
- How have bikes and their use developed over time and what would the freestyle bike of the future look like?
- What gear do the athletes wear and why?
Time: 7:30pm
Location: Café

Free food will be provided to all participants and Red Bull will be on site as well. Concurrent with XDL Industry Night Bert’s Mega Mall will also be hosting a BBQ and athlete meet and greet for fans of the sport. The meet and greet will include:

This will be your best and most effective opportunity to learn about the sportbike freestyle movement this year so don’t miss it.

Please RSVP to info@xdlshow.com so we can get a head count for food.

Well Nashville was great time. Unfortunately, it rained on Friday and also rained for an hour or so when the gates had just opened at XDL, so the event attendance suffered a bit. The folks who hung out to finish off Saturday night after the rain were treated to some incredible action in the FMF cup final rounds and the Speed and Strength Sickest Trick Competition.

Here are the results, check this thread for more pics by our friends at www.StuntBums.com
