Motorcycle Stuntriding Overview

spreader wheelie

Motorcycle stunt riding has come a long way since the days of Evel Knievel. In the last 30 years, sport bikes have become lighter and more powerful and the range of tricks they can perform has grown. Along with these new, exciting tricks, the appeal and sponsorship of professional stunt riding has increased and so have the types of riders turning professional.

The Evolution of Stunting

Motorcycle stunt riding isn’t a new fad, although it has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. There’s something inherent in human psychology that thrives on the danger and skill involved in stunt riding. In fact, one of the pioneers of motorcycle stunting was Orren “Putt” Mossman, who toured the United States in the first half of the 20th century. Mossman’s early tricks included shooting helium balloons with a rifle while he rode and riding with a sack over his head.

Stunt Riding Today

Massive wheelies, burnouts and death-defying acrobatics have taken the place of Mossman’s early gimmicks, but the thrill remains. Stunt riding has gained an international community of fans, with competitions happening in the U.S. and abroad. The best riders receive sponsorships, generally from motorcycle and automotive outfits looking to advertise their products.

Even with sponsorships, however, stunt riding is still a sport which is more heart than dollar signs and this is what really attracts fans. Stunting is an exhibition of skill, which great riders spend hours honing every day. This sport still has no international rules, regulations or sanctions. Every competition holds the threat of medical injury, and it’s not a sport for the dilettante.

The appeal of the lone expert that holds skillfulness above financial reward attracts all types. Barriers have been broken down and sponsored female stunt riders like Jessica Maine show that there is room for everyone in professional stunt riding. Stunt riding is all about breaking perceived barriers, after all, and it makes sense that the most daring of either gender would be attracted to this burgeoning sport.

XDL 2012 Event Schedule news

We have gotten some news on the 2012 XDL Event Schedule. Even though info has been very hard to get and harder to confirm, a tweet by the XDL Staff today has lead us to believe that something we heard about a month ago may be true.

XDL posts "revealing" info about 2012 schedule on twitter

It says “Our 2012 schedule is almost confirmed, but just fyi all event dates will be in June, July, August. RT and pass it on, thanks!” via @XDLShow

Back in January a little bird (not twitter) told us that the XDL schedule was being compacted into the late summer to accomodate a reality show filming schedule. And that the Monterey and Indianapolis Moto GP events would go on as usual. Obviously it is too late in the year for Daytona Bike Week and it would be too hot to go back to Scottsdale AZ during those months, so we can assume those events are out. We also know that the SuperSpeedway in Nashville was closed, so this seems to eliminate the usual May Nashville stop.

So with those things up in the air, we wonder if XDL may be going to some more northerly lattitudes and will XDL return to its home in LA? Well the economy has also forced the closure of the Irwindale Speedway, but The Queen Mary in Long Beach has undergone another ownership change and we are told that its parking lots are looking nice and fresh nowadays.

Make your assumptions folks, we have ours. As always check back for the latest info on the 2012 XDL Schedule here at Stuntride.com or on our Facebook and Twitter.

Aaron Colton goes to Trinidad

The first week of February, Red Bull Street Bike Freestyle Athlete Aaron Colton shipped off to Trinidad for a weeks worth of Carnival Festivities. Motorcyclists came out in droves to support a foreign motorsports athlete on their home turf. The motorcycle culture runs deep for a small island where motorcycles are pricey and are not readily available. The week was amazing and was capped off by a demo on stage in front of 15,000 screaming fans. Not bad for a weeks worth of work.
Watch the video below and stop by and say hey to Aaron on his social networking sites! Twitter.com/AaronColton
